Welcome To Lizard Joes in Chelem Yucatan Mexico

We have been visiting Mexico for years and had given thought to living there one day. Then one day, back in 2004, we were talking with Joe King Carrasco about how he and we just love the sights, sounds, hospitality and unhurried life style of Mexico and its people. Thats when Joe suggested we open a bar in Mexico that we could call home, relax and where he could play his music. So what would we call it? Well my nickname from my youth was Lizard and of course Joe is Joe and so the dream of Lizard Joes was born. Now the next question was where? We spent the next couple of years visiting the Puerto Vallarta area where Joe has made his home as well as up and down the Mayan Riviera with its crystal clear, blue waters and white sand beaches. What we found was beach front property in these areas were just out of reach for our budget and the dream began to flicker. Then one of my best friends of 15 years in Cancun suggested we check out the Yucatan Gulf Coast. It was here we found a large, friendly Mayan amd Mexican community, small fishing villages, unspoiled beaches, beautiful seas, a major city (Merida) nearby offering all the cultural, health and shopping but most of all affordable beach front real estate.

Thinking About Buying Property In Mexico?

Buying property in Mexico, whether it's land, a condo or a house, can offer good value for money in comparison to prices in the US, Canada or Europe. Land costs can be lower, building and maintenance is cheaper, cost of ownership e.g. taxes and utilities are very low. However, property prices in some areas have risen dramatically in recent years and care should be taken in assessing a property's true value. Ultimately, the value of real estate in the Yucatan is what someone is willing to pay for it. There is no “formal” market or appraised value in Mexico since access to historical and trend data to for setting a sales price or informing a buyer what they should expect to pay is difficult to come by. There is no board of real estate, no professional regulation, everyone and their mother is selling real estate here and it is just about impossible to file legal action against anyone. For this reason, market prices are extremely localized and sellers often set prices based on what they hope they can receive for a property Vs whether it is in line with similar properties, recent sales or even reasonable. As a result, some very good deals can be had, especially when buying from Mexican nationals but on the other hand there is an ever present danger of paying an overinflated price for those who have not done their homework and research. So Waaaazzz Up With Lizard Joes?

Two years ago we incorporated Lizard Joes and purchased almost 10k sq ft of property in the town of Chelem, Yucatan, Mexico with about 45 ft of beach front. We found an architect and now have a contractor ready to build Lizard Joes Hotel, Bar & Restaurant. We had hoped to break ground in early 2008, however we still have things to finish up in Texas, like sell our house! Dios Mio in this economy We did find enough funds to build the wall around the property which should be completed soon after Easter week. Next we work on getting the permits and funds to build Lizard Joe's Beach Club serving Texas BBQ, Beer and Budaritas in time for Spring Break 2010. We will continue adding on to Lizard Joe's as funds become available and are expanding our little casita to include rooms for rent across from the beach until we can get the house sold and hotel built.

Our Vision

The archtectual drawings for Lizard Joes have been complete. The original plan called for a Bar and Grill with seating for 75 to 100 customers specializing in Authentic Texas BBQ and the sounds of Joe King Carrasco Ay Ay AY. The Hotel would feature a large reception area, internet cafe, gift and sundries shop, pool and a total of ten guest suites.
Given the new Eco Beach Law passed in Mexico, our building lines have changed so the vision will need to be scaled down a bit. We have received approval for the new building lines and will be taking out the internet cafe, large reception area, ... and reduce the number of rooms to six suites.
Nearby cities and towns are Merida, Progreso, Chuburna, Sisal, Chicxulub Meteorite Crater, Uaymitun.
